Instructor Training for Youth Tractor Safety Certification and EducationWednesday, February 1, 2012 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM (ET)Montpelier, VT |
|
Event Details
The primary purpose of this training is to prepare Community Lead Instructors who will then educate Vermont youth in their own communities on safer operation of tractors and machinery.
What Is This Training About?
This Train-the-Trainers workshop will offer guidance to instructors on some standard content and options for tractor instruction, and develop a peer mentorship community for instructors to be able to support each other's efforts.
As you may already know, Tractor Safety Certification is a legal requirement for any young person 14 or 15 years old who is employed by anyone other than their immediate guardian to operate a tractor greater than 20 horsepower.
Additionally, while young people who operate tractors on their family farms - and those 16 and older - are not required to be certified by law, the rate and severity of youth farm injuries related to tractors and machinery clearly indicate that this training is important for all youth operators.
We're very excited that more young people will be able to receive this important training and thank you for contributing to the safety of Vermont youth and our agricultural community.
This instructor training course uses the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program curriculum, created under the Youth Farm Safety Education and Certification Program to support agricultural education through Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture.

University of Vermont Extension 4-H Youth Agriculture Project
University of Vermont Extension has been helping individuals and communities put research-based knowledge to work since 1913. All of UVM Extension's 4-H Youth Development Program help youth to become productive citizens and catalysts for positive change to meet the needs of a diverse and changing society.
The 4-H Youth Agriculture Project was established in 2001 to serve non-traditional or underserved 4-H audiences, such as low-income youth, older teens, youth identified as "at risk," and kids with behavioral and developmental challenges. Through hands-on education in agricultural safety and garden-based nutrition, the project helps young people build the life and job skills to participate in Vermont’s food systems.
